Steel decking profile for composite steel and concrete floors

Commercial overview. SUALSA supplies HTC55.174.6 composite floor decking for the construction of composite steel and concrete floors. The profile has a height of 55 mm, an approximate pitch of 174 mm and a stated useful width of 870 mm. Nominal thicknesses of 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 mm are available, subject to confirmation of availability and project requirements.

Product Description

Composite floor decking is a cold-formed galvanised steel profile that acts as permanent formwork during concrete pouring and, once the concrete has hardened, contributes to the structural performance of the composite floor. The embossments and profile geometry promote mechanical bond between the steel sheet and the concrete.

Advantages of Composite Floor Decking

  • Acts as permanent formwork during construction.
  • Reduces the auxiliary work associated with traditional formwork.
  • Supports fast and industrialised construction methods.
  • Provides a working platform during certain installation stages, subject to the design and applicable safety measures.
  • Enables lightweight solutions for steel structures, refurbishment and extensions.
  • May reduce dead load compared with certain solid slab solutions.

Typical Applications

  • Floors in industrial and commercial buildings.
  • Mezzanines and extensions to industrial buildings.
  • Car parks, platforms and logistics buildings.
  • Structural refurbishment and strengthening.
  • Buildings with steel structures or composite systems.

Steel Sheet Thickness and Weight Table

Self-weight values stated in the technical sheet. They must be confirmed with the manufacturer and the supply documentation.

Nominal thickness Stated self-weight
0.8 mm 8.06 kg/m²
1.0 mm 11.06 kg/m²
1.2 mm 13.63 kg/m²

Note: the weights are reference values from the technical sheet. Actual weight may vary within manufacturing tolerances and must be confirmed in the quotation and material documentation.

Equivalent Steel Area Table

Theoretical equivalent steel area per metre of useful floor width, calculated from the published self-weight using a reference steel density of 7,850 kg/m³.

Nominal thickness Published weight (kg/m²) Equivalent area (cm²/m)
0.8 mm 8.06 10.27
1.0 mm 11.06 14.09
1.2 mm 13.63 17.36

Equivalent area (cm²/m) = steel sheet weight (kg/m²) ÷ 0.785

Verification note: these values represent an equivalent area calculated from the published weight. They do not describe the projected geometric area of the profile and do not replace certified structural properties. Structural calculations must use manufacturer data and the project technical documentation.

Design and Installation Criteria

  • Define the span between supports and the number of bays.
  • Check whether temporary propping is required during installation.
  • Determine the total slab depth and concrete strength.
  • Check permanent loads, imposed loads and construction-stage loads.
  • Design the mesh reinforcement, positive reinforcement and support reinforcement.
  • Verify fire resistance, vibration, deflection and durability requirements.
  • Define overlaps, fixings, minimum bearing lengths, openings and flashings.

Load Tables and Fire Resistance

For specific projects, the complete technical report must be used and the design must be checked by a qualified professional. A commercial product sheet may state that load tables are available, but it does not replace the structural design of the floor.

Concrete, Reinforcement and Finishes

  • The technical sheet considers structural concrete and includes self-weight tables for different slab depths.
  • The project must define anti-crack mesh and any additional reinforcement.
  • Fire resistance may require specific positive reinforcement depending on slab depth, span and support arrangement.
  • Corrosion protection must be compatible with the exposure environment and intended service life.
  • Openings, concentrated loads and changes in direction require specific verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is composite floor decking?

It is a profiled steel sheet that acts as permanent formwork and works together with concrete in the completed composite floor.

What is the height of the HTC55 profile?

The stated nominal height is 55 mm.

What is the useful width?

The technical sheet states a useful width of 870 mm.

Which thicknesses are covered?

0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 mm.

Which material is stated in the technical sheet?

Galvanised steel S320GD with Z275 coating, in accordance with UNE-EN 10346.

Which lengths are stated?

A standard length of 6,000 mm and a stated maximum length of 12,000 mm.
